The Extra Time @ SUFC Study Support Centre opened at the start of 2005 and operates within the heart of Roots Hall, home of Southend United Football Club. As part of the ‘Playing for Success’ initiative launched by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) in 1997, the scheme aims to use the power and motivation of professional sport to raise attainment in literacy, numeracy and ICT as well as improve the self-esteem, confidence and motivation of pupils.

Extra Time @ SUFC is a partnership between the newly named Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), Southend Borough Council and Southend United Football Club. We are pleased to be part of such a successful project. From humble beginnings in 1997, the initiative now has over 150 professional sports clubs within its family. In recent years, Playing for Success has been extended to include sports such as Rugby League, Rugby Union, Basketball and Tennis.

Here at Southend United we have a purpose built, state of the art classroom. As well as a wireless computer network, we have a wide range of multimedia equipment and an interactive student response system. Our wireless network allows us to access the classroom from anywhere within Roots Hall using our laptops.
