In July 2006, at the end of our first complete academic year, we welcomed Maurice Smith, Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Schools and other dignitaries to open the centre.

As head of Ofsted, Mr Smith paid his first visit to Southend and was keen to experience at first hand the work of the centre in contributing to school improvement. Centre Manager, Simon Bell said, “We are very pleased that Mr Smith has chosen to join us to celebrate the end of our first year as it highlights the work we have done to assist schools in ensuring that pupils reach their full potential.”

Mr Smith met with pupils from Temple Sutton Primary School and St Bernard’s High School for Girls before being presented with a signed shirt by Steff Gaisie, one of SUFC’s rising stars. The speeches were followed by the unveiling of a commemorative plaque by the guest of honour.
